From military barracks to depository of documents

The GEPA equipment, which responds to the initials, in Catalan, of Space Guarantee for the Preservation of Access (Garantia d'Espai per a la Preservació de l'Accés), is a cooperative deposit service for storing and conserving low-use documents, guaranteeing their future preservation and accessibility.

The GEPA building is located in a privileged location on the Gardeny hill in Lleida, where years ago there was a military barracks.

The name GEPA is reminiscent of the dromedary hump used to store water. In this case, however, documents that can be used in the future are stored.

What are the benefits of GEPA?

• It promotes the release of space in libraries so that they can be spent for new uses for users (workrooms, meeting rooms, etc.).
• Contributes to the cooperative and efficient management of library collections.
• It meets the optimal environmental and safety conditions for the stored documents.

More than 3,600 m² at your disposal

The GEPA has a maximum capacity planned for more than 40 km of shelves, distributed among the 3,600 m² for storage offered by the three floors that make up the GEPA.

What documents are stored in the GEPA?

• Non-fundamental documents for the institution that owns them.
• Duplicate copies.
• Unused or rarely used materials
• Documents that we believe that someday will be useful, or that a copy must be preserved.
   

Once deposited in the cooperative warehouse, these documents can be consulted through the local catalogs of the participating institutions and the CCUC. The user can request copies or even access the originals in the consultation room of the GEPA or the participating libraries. Requests are answered within 24 hours of receipt!

In addition to depositing documents, at GEPA we have allocated other spaces for work rooms, consultation rooms, meeting rooms, digitization rooms and offices.
